The Broken Axle Trail
Buckle up, and get ready for some serious four-wheeling; this trail makes the Broken Arrow look like an overrated golf cart ride. Not only is the distance covered on the trail almost three times that of Broken Arrow, but our Broken Axle Trail is in a pristine area with hardly any other traffic. We pass six tanks (watering holes), which are great attractions for game, so the chances of seeing Mule Deer, Javelina, and even mountain Lions are good.
Beginning in flat desert, you make your way through Sidewinder Wash, and then tackle the long climb up The Hill of Death to Rollover Point. Next are the Prickly Pear Fields; the trail here turns to basalt so the jeep proceeds slowly, climbing along while the driver entertains you with facts and stories about the area.
At the top you are greeted with an unforgettable panoramic view of Sedona that impresses even the locals—from Sycamore Canyon to Oak Creek Canyon. After a break at the Apache Lookout, you begin your journey back, passing the tanks quietly in the hope of seeing game. Because of the remote nature of this tour, we have a minimum number of four guests. If there are only two of you we will be glad to try to add to the departure.
