ROB DEMAYO
Robert DeMayo took up traveling at the age of twenty when he left his job as a bio-medical Engineer to explore the world. Over the next 15 years he traveled to every corner of the globe, spending almost 8 years abroad, and experiencing just short of 100 countries. Subsequent trips were funded by journalism, importing, and odd jobs along the way. In addition to many six-month journeys, he has worked his way around the world three times. He prefers overland journeys, utilizing local transportation. He is a member of The Explorers Club and The Archaeological Institute of America, and a fellow of The American Geographical Society.
During his travels he has worked extensively for the travel section of The Telegraph, out of Hudson, N.H.. His first assignment for the paper was to drive from New Hampshire to Panama in 1988, writing feature articles on the way. He has written three novels, four collections of poetry, several screenplays, as well as hundreds of newspaper articles. He also accumulated a photo archive with over 15,000 images. For many of his journeys he was sponsored by Olympus and Eastern Mountain Sports who supplied gear and technical advice.
His first time in a climbing harness was in 1994 when he completed a ten pitch, technical climb to the summit of Mt. Kenya (17,052 ft.). That same year he descended 7,800 feet to the bottom of South Africa’s deepest gold mine, and slid through a 2 ft. high shaft (45% angle) while drilling was in progress. In 1995 he spent two weeks ascending Argentina’s highest mountain, Mt. Aconcagua (22,829 ft.).
Next, he worked as the Marketing Manager for a company called Eos, which served as the Travel Office for six non-profit organizations. They are: The Explorers Club, The Archaeological Institute of America, The Field Museum, The Shedd Aquarium, The Denver Museum of Nature and History, and The American Geographical Society. Eos specialized in submersible dives to the Titanic and Bismark, Antarctic voyages, and safaris and archaeological tours throughout the world. His responsibilities included advertisements and web updates, production and creature of brochures produced in-house, as well as overseeing production of brochures produced by operators, and press releases. He also created catalogs for each organization.
September 11 ended a three year stint at Eos, so Robert drove to Alaska with his wife, Diana, and their two daughters (then 9 months and 2 years old). For the next three years he worked as a guide in Alaska during the summers (horseback rides and hiking in the Yukon, and historical tours of Skagway and The White Pass), and as a jeep guide in Sedona, AZ during the winter.
Currently he resides full time in Sedona, AZ with his wife (Diana), and two girls, Tavish (7) and Saydrin (5), and is employed as the Marketing Director for A Day in the West, The Adventure Co., and The Bradshaw Gallery.
